and now I'm going to try to tell you all about my week there.
Sunday, July 4: 2 hour van ride, got to the church we're staying at, got all our stuff in a big empty room with about 10 African American girls from Houston, TX, and us 5 girls (ms Moyer, me, taryn, lauren, carolyn. We had dinner then went to see fireworks.
Monday: Carolyn and I found out we were on the Red Crew, that meant that on Monday we had to get up early and make breakfast; Mason, Ben, and Mr Moyer were on the Red Crew also (along with like 6 Koreans from Marylandm, they were around 11-13). Red Crew, as our comminuty service thing, helped out with KidsClub, where about 20 local kids come to the church for a kind of all summer VBS from 1pm-3pm. Afterwards, when the rest of the Northland crew came back, we went to the beach and hung out, swam, the guys played football in the water. We took showers in the public showers that most people use to get the sand off them, 'cus the church where YouthWorks was, the organization we were with, didn't have any showers in the building. Most people went to the local pool and took showers, but we were already at the beach, so we took them there, in bathingsuits.
That night we went to the Pier for our evening activity, it was 5 stories, not much in it though. We didn't mean to, but while were trying to find a floor that we all wanted to go to and there was something to do on that floor, we ended up riding the elevator. We went down to the 1st floor so much, where there was this little old lady at the info counter (right next to the elevators), that we were afraid she would kick us out. She also kept saying you could onlu have 8 people in one elevator, we told we had exactly 8 (which was true), heh. When we got back, we had church kinda stuff, before us girls went to bed, we got in a circle and prayed for the guys (Mason, Jeff, Ben, Jordan, Mr Moyer).
Tuesday:Red Crew went to Taking it to the Streets, a food bank thing for the homeless. There was about 7000 pounds of sweet potatoes, we moved half of them about. There was also a bunch of candy, ohmyword, soooo much candy! We moved/loaded 3500o lbs of food into vans and trucks. After that, we went back to the church, had lunch, then helped with KidsClub. That night's activity was going to St. John's Pass Village or something like that. It was fun, we hung out, got food, listened to music.
That night we found out that Jordan's mom called him about an audition for a tv show, but the audition was Thursday, he would have to leave early if he wanted to audition. He said he would pray about it and tell us his decision in the morning. If he chose to go home, he would drive home with Rudy and J-wood, who were coming to visit us Wednesday night and would drive back the same night.
Wednesday: Red Crew went to the Regeneration Center, a recycling place, we sorted paper that was on converyor belts. It got a lil boring, so we were glad when the machine broke, hehe. We had lunch at the recycling place. The recycling place employs mentally retarded people for jobs like stacking cup like things and opening thousands of envelopes and throwing the contents of them in one bin, and the envelope in another. So while we were eating lunch, Jordan has his chips (he went with the red crew today), and a lady who works there comes up and just grabs his chips from him and walks away, haha. Then she comes back 5 minutes later and holds at her hand towards Mason, who was eating chips, so Mason gave her his chips, he realy didn'y have a choice. Then she went in our room/place where we ate and got some water and left, we never did see her again, but it was so funny. While we were waiting for the recycling machine to get working again-which never worked for the rest of the day-, the Koreans taught us slapping games, I didn't play 'cus I like my hands, I don't want them all red and stinging. After the recycling place, it was time to shower, so we all got in the vans and went to the YMCA pool and took showers. Then we had dinner at the church, that was when Rudy and J-wood came. After dinner, for our activity, we went to a soup kitchen, some people served food, some washed dishes, so talked to people. I talked to people, there was this one guy, he was a Christian, and he had LOTS of head knowledge about the Bible, but he just made me uncomfortable, I didn't like talking to him at all, but everyone else in our group just loved him and hung on every word he said. The guy was saying how 'cus Jesus was poor and didn't have a home, he didn't need a home either, and then got on this speel about who Jesus loves more, rich, or poor people, and said that 'cus Jesus was homeless, he loved the homeless. He talked as if Jesus didn't love the rich! As if God wasn't crazy about people who lived in a house! totally not true! Jesus loves ALL of us! Later that night, Rudy and J-wood left, and Jordan left with them for his audition.
