In my mother's dorm/sorority in college, when someone was given a ring (engagement) they would tell the dorm-mom. The dorm-mom would announce it that day and at 10pm that night every one would come down and sing 3 rounds of a song (The girl wouldn't tell a soul about the ring until the singing). While singing, they would pass a lit candle around the circle that they were singing in. On the third round of the song, the newly-engaged girl would blow out the candle when it came to her. That's how everyone found out that she was getting married!
