Asbury entrance
Furman entranceOk, here's the deal:
Furman gave me the tuition exchange, so I'd be paying room and board plus $3,000 ($11,000 total), but only if my mom kept working at Rollins for the 4 years I would attend Furman. My mom makes about $12,000 working at Rollins.
Asbury gave me enough scholarships that if I went this year, my freshman year, I would be paying $12,000 total. However, Asbury said that I could participate in the scholarship weekend in February that is really only for highschool seniors because I missed that weekend my "senior" year b/c I did not really know I was a senior. So that weekend I could compete (and probably get 50% or 100% scholarship for my 3 remaining years at Asbury. Also, if I attend Asbury, my mom does not have to work at Rollins and so could make like $45,000. I could go to Europe, not have to work through college, and buy all the clothes I want (w/o funding that awful thing called Walmart).
I really like Furman, it's 4-5 hours closer to home than Asbury and warmer than Asbury. Furman's more prestigious, more renowned for its academics, more beautiful, has a football team. But Furman has 40% of its girls in sororities. Asbury is Christian -maybe too christian (very strict on dancing, late nights). Asbury doesn't have a greek life -which I like. But Asbury doesn't attract the valedictorians that Furman does, Asbury doesn't get the upper class kids like Furman does. Asbury's music department isn't as good as Furman's. Asbury is almost a third of Furman's size though. If I went to Asbury, I'd be "the smart kid", whereas at Furman I'd be normal (eh, that's what I think, according to the stats and the people i know who have gone to each school).
Do I want to go to Asbury if there is a severe lack of kids in the top of their class and it doesn't even allow dancing except at "military balls, weddings, and other special occasions"? I don't know anyone in Wimore (Asbury), but I do know the Bonitatis in Greenville (SC).
My mom says she was not very impressed with Furman and loved Asbury from the start. She also adds that her best friend has wanted me to go to Asbury from the start. At the table today, my mom said "It's settled, you're going to Asbury". I guess I don't want to force my mom to work a job at Rollins that she doesn't particularly enjoy that much (she doesn't dis-like it, but she doesnt love it either).
Asbury doesn't even have a football team. Asbury is full of Christians though, which means lots of Christian guys, easy-to-find Bible studies and accountability. Furman is not a Christian school, I would be forced to live out my faith in a truly different lifestyle than non-believers, I would be surrounded by people that I could witness to.
